ABSTINENCE - No sex
If you are sexually active use condoms correctly each time
HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED?
Having sexual relations with someone who has it
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
You can get infected in several areas; eyes, mouth, throat, anus, urinary tract, and uterus. YOU MAY NOT
NOTICE ANY SYMPTOMS, but if you do the following may occur:
Uterus/Urinary tract:
Vaginal bleeding between your periods
Pain or burning while urinating
Increased vaginal discharge
Gonorrhea in the anus:
Itching, soreness, bleeding, a discharge from the rectum, or painful bowel (poop) movements
Gonorrhea in the throat:
Sore throat
WHEN SHOULD I BE TESTED?
If you have had any sexual contact
Burning or pain when you pass urine
Vaginal discharge
Another Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD), such as Chlamydia
TREATMENT
Gonorrhea can be treated and cured with antibiotics
Finish all medications
If you still have symptoms after treatment, go back to the doctor
Your partner needs to go see the doctor as well
Avoid having sex until all treatment for you and your partner is completed, so you don't re-infect each other
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T GET TREATED?
Gonorrhea stays in the body if not treated
It can spread to the blood or joints. This condition can be very serious.
Can spread to the fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a serious infection that
happens when Gonorrhea spreads to the reproductive organs. PID can cause damage that makes you
unable to get pregnant.
Untreated Gonorrhea may cause chronic pain in your pelvic area
