THE HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS
The Sexually Transmitted Disease Causing Cancer and Warts
By
Dr. Lori Gore-Green
The Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that is one of the most
highly contagious diseases in the United States. There are over 100 different types of HPV
that are assigned by a number are placed into 2 categories: High Risk and Low Risk.
The most common “high risk” HPV types are “16” and “18” of which are responsible for causing
70 % of all cervical cancer cases in the United States. However, through oral and anal sex
practices, they have been associated with cancers of the head, neck, throat and anus. To a
lesser degree, there is an association with cancer of the penis.
The most common “low risk” HPV types are “6” and “11” of which are responsible for causing
90% of all genital wart episodes. Warts are cauliflower-like growths that can form and multiply
on the genitals, mouth and/or throat. Exposure to low risk HPV may also occur by other forms
of close contact such as kissing, touching or rubbing.
Fortunately, two vaccines have been developed to stop the spread of certain HPV types and
they are Gardasil and Cervarix. Gardasil is the only vaccine that is currently available in the
United States. The Gardasil vaccine protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18. The age
recommendation for Gardasil is 8-27 years. The Cervarix vaccine protects against HPV types
16 and 18. The age recommendation for Cervarix is 10-45 years. Both Gardasil and Cervarix
are given to girls and women by 3 injections over 6 months. Cervarix is projected to become
available in the U.S. later this year or in 2010.
Please join the fight to save lives by preventing the spread of the Human Papilloma Virus. Call
your doctor to see if you are eligible for the Gardasil vaccinations.
